Dr. Southers is the author of Homegrown Violent Extremism, a definitive academic study of domestic terrorism threats. His writing has been published in a number of media outlets, including USA Today (where he was previously a regular contributor), the Newark Star-Ledger, and the LA Times. In addition to his TEDx Talk, he has appeared in several TV programs (The History Channel’s America’s Book of Secrets: The FBI, Bravo Television’s Spy Games, and CNN’s The Nineties). He hosted the USC Reel Review Podcast (2017-2021), consulted as the technical advisor for the recent Netflix film Carry-On, and is the national security and law enforcement analyst for NBC4 Los Angeles. He holds doctoral and master’s degrees from USC, as well as a BA from Brown University.
